Take the Zero-waste Challenge & Tips for Zero-waste Living
Our town of Buckland banned single use plastic bags, making it illegal to buy a product at the store in a plastic bag that would end up in landfill—a wise policy for every town, but just one of many necessary steps required to minimize the waste stream. Our society has been functioning (or perhaps “malfunctioning”) on the “easy” path of fossil fuels and the accumulated waste of generations. We’ve accepted these habits of the past as normal—until now.
The story of the future is a different one, beginning now.
When you go to the store, bring all of your own containers and buy bulk items.
Pack your own to-go containers when you eat at a restaurant.
Bring your own water bottle, utensils, cloth napkin, and travel plate or bowl everywhere you go, so you are prepared with all the items you need when you least expect it.
At home, set up a trash barrel that is only the size of a milk carton or smaller, alongside larger containers for compost and recycling.
Starting today, think before your purchase. For example, how can you make crackers at home to avoid the packaging waste? Can you reduce your waste basket to the size of a tea cup? Can you spend time with friends and neighbors cooking snacks and treats, instead of buying snacks in single use plastic and metal wrappers?
